Fedral Skilled Trade Program (FSTP)

 FSTP is a program for the people who have education and experience in a skilled trade, based on which they can relocate to Canada as Permanent Residents. Since January 2015, all the FSTP applicants are managed under Express Entry.


  • You should plan to stay outside the Province of Quebec.

  • Minimum 2 years of full time paid job experience during past 5 years in trade that is eligible for FSTP.

  • You must meet the language requirements (English or French) in reading, writing, speaking and listening ( CLB 5 equivalent or more)

  • Must meet the job requirements of the skilled trade mentioned under the set National Occupations Classification (NOC)

Skilled Trades currently eligible for the Federal Skilled Trades Program are organized under major and minor groups of the NOC:

  • Major Group 72, industrial, electrical and construction trades.
  • Major Group 73, maintenance and equipment operation trades.
  • Major Group 82, supervisors and technical jobs in natural resources, agriculture and related production.
  • Major Group 92, processing, manufacturing and utilities supervisors and central control operators.
  • Minor Group 632, chefs and cooks. and
  • Minor Group 633, butchers and bakers.

These major NOC groups are further subdivided into different occupations.  (Source CIC website)

  • Must have full time employment for the period of at least one year or a certificate of qualification from of the provinces.

  • To earn more points under Express Entry Pool, getting ECA is beneficial, although it is not mandatory under this program.

  • Must have clean health and criminal record.
