It covers employees of foreign employers, freelancers serving non-resident clients, and owners managing a foreign-registered company. The headline requirement is a minimum gross annual income of EUR 42,000, alongside valid health insurance, a clean criminal record, a valid travel document and proof of accommodation in Malta.
The permit is granted initially and can be renewed up to three times, for a total stay of up to about four years, subject to a minimum presence in Malta. A notable benefit is that qualifying remote income enjoys a favourable tax regime.
Processing takes about 30 working days, and the application fee is EUR 300 per applicant. Because income thresholds and tax treatment can change, confirm the current details on the official nomad residence site before applying.
