The Opportunity Card is a points-based job-search residence permit launched on 1 June 2024, letting qualified non-EU nationals come to Germany to look for work without a prior job offer. It replaced the former Job Seeker Visa for most applicants.
The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte, §20a Residence Act) lets skilled non-EU jobseekers move to Germany to search for qualified work on the ground. There are two ways to qualify: hold a qualification already recognised in Germany, or score at least six points across criteria such as qualification, professional experience, German or English language ability, age and previous ties to Germany. A practical advantage of the points route is that a foreign qualification recognised in your country of origin is enough — full German recognition is not required up front.
You must show funds to cover your job-search stay, for example via a blocked account or formal sponsorship, and hold health insurance. Basic German (A1) or good English (B2) serves as a baseline, and you may take part-time work or short trial employment while searching. The national D visa costs EUR 75, and the residence permit issued in Germany costs EUR 100.
The Opportunity Card is ideal if you are qualified but do not yet have a German job offer; once you find a qualifying role, you can switch to a skilled-worker permit or EU Blue Card. Confirm the current points table and required funding amount on make-it-in-germany.com before applying, and ACME can help you assess your points and plan the switch to a work permit.
