L is short-term (tied to a contract of up to a year), B is the standard multi-year residence permit, and C is open-ended permanent settlement.
The L permit is for short stays, usually under a year, with validity matching the employment contract (typically 3–12 months). The B permit is the standard residence permit for longer stays; for EU/EFTA nationals it is valid five years and renewable when conditions are met. The C settlement permit is open-ended and gives the most secure status before citizenship. A C permit is generally granted after 10 years of residence for third-country nationals, or after 5 years for EU-15/EFTA nationals and certain strong-integration cases. There is also a G permit for cross-border commuters who live abroad and work in Switzerland.
