Across most routes you'll need a valid travel document, all-risks health insurance, and proof of stable resources or means of subsistence. Work routes add a matching job offer and meeting a salary threshold; integration routes add German-language proof.
While each Austrian route has its own checklist, several requirements recur across nearly all of them. You'll generally need a valid travel document, all-risks health insurance, and evidence of stable, regular resources or adequate means of subsistence to support yourself (and your accommodation).
For work routes, add a concrete job offer matching your qualifications and proof that the pay meets the relevant minimum — for example, the EU Blue Card's 2026 threshold of at least EUR 55,678 gross per year, or the Other Key Workers threshold of at least EUR 3,465 gross per month. Points-based Red-White-Red tiers also require an AMS assessment confirming you meet the points. Students need proof of admission and, at public universities, tuition (currently EUR 726.72 per semester for third-country students). Family applicants need proof of the relationship and, for most adults, basic German (A1).
For permanent residence, you'll additionally need to have completed Module 2 of the Integration Agreement, which carries a German-language and integration requirement.
Exact document lists and the proof-of-funds figures are set by the authorities and updated over time, so always confirm the current requirements for your specific route on migration.gv.at before assembling your file.
