The EU Blue Card (modrá karta) is a long-term residence permit with work authorisation for highly qualified non-EU professionals, requiring a university-level degree and a salary of at least 1.5 times the Czech average wage. It offers wider intra-EU mobility than the Employee Card.
The Blue Card is Czechia's route for highly qualified third-country professionals. You generally need higher or university education of at least three years (or qualifying experience for IT roles), an employment contract or binding offer lasting at least one year, and a gross salary of at least 1.5 times the Czech average wage — a threshold that is updated annually. A valid passport, accommodation and medical insurance are also required.
Its main strength over the Employee Card is mobility: the Blue Card offers wider movement within the EU, which appeals to professionals who want flexibility across member states. Processing is listed at 90 days for new applications, dropping to 30 days when you move from another EU Blue Card, with a fee of CZK 2,500 in Czechia or a CZK 5,000 consular fee abroad.
Because the salary figure changes each year, always confirm the current threshold on ipc.gov.cz before relying on it. ACME can compare your degree, experience and offer against the Blue Card rules and help you decide between it and the Employee Card.
