Switzerland runs a two-track system. EU/EFTA citizens move freely under the free-movement agreement, with no quota or labour-market test. Non-EU/EFTA (third-country) nationals face a much stricter regime: work permits are capped by annual federal quotas and are largely reserved for managers, specialists and other highly qualified workers. A job offer alone is not enough. The employer must apply on your behalf and demonstrate that no suitable candidate could be recruited from Switzerland or an EU/EFTA state, that you have the right qualifications and experience, and that pay and conditions match local norms. A permit must also still be available under the relevant quota.
