The D8 is Portugal's digital nomad visa, introduced in 2022, for remote workers and freelancers who earn from employers or clients outside Portugal. It requires a higher income than the D7.
The D8 visa was introduced in 2022 for non-EU remote workers and freelancers — digital nomads who actively work but earn their income from employers or clients based outside Portugal. It is distinct from the D7, which is for people living on passive income, and it asks for a higher income level: an average monthly income above the required multiple of the Portuguese minimum wage.
To qualify you generally need proof of remote employment or freelance contracts with entities outside Portugal, that qualifying income, proof of accommodation in Portugal, a clean criminal record, a valid passport and insurance. As with other Portuguese routes, you apply for the visa at a consulate or VFS and then apply for the residence permit with AIMA after arrival, with the visa decision due within around 60 days.
Because the income requirement is a multiple of the minimum wage and can change, confirm the current figure before applying. ACME can help you work out whether the D8 or D7 is the better fit for your situation and prepare the supporting evidence, and we suggest verifying the details on vistos.mne.gov.pt first.
