The D7 is for people living on passive income (pensions, rents, dividends). The D8 is for remote workers and freelancers actively earning from clients or employers outside Portugal, and it requires a higher income.
The D7 visa is aimed at people who can support themselves with stable passive income — pensions, rental income, dividends and similar — without working in Portugal. The D8 visa, introduced in 2022, is for digital nomads: people who actively work remotely but earn their income from employers or clients outside Portugal. The D8 requires a higher income level than the D7 (a multiple of the Portuguese minimum wage). Both are applied for at a consulate and then converted into a residence permit with AIMA after arrival.
