Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs): Spreading Immigration Benefits Across Canada
Launched in 1998, PNPs aim to distribute immigration benefits more evenly across Canada, beyond the traditional hubs of Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia. Since their inception, the Prairie (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba) and Atlantic (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador) provinces have seen increased immigrant attraction, largely due to the PNP. There are various streams through which one can apply.
PNP Streams:
- Express Entry-Aligned (‘Enhanced’) Streams: These streams are linked with the federal Express Entry system. A provincial nomination under an enhanced stream grants an additional 600 CRS points, virtually ensuring an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence through Express Entry, with processing times typically around six months.
- Base Streams: Applicants apply directly to a PNP stream. Upon receiving a provincial nomination, they then apply to the federal government for permanent residence processing.
