Overview
The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is designed for individuals who want to immigrate to a specific province or territory in Canada and are equipped with the skills, education, and work experience to contribute to the local economy. Each province and territory (except Quebec and Nunavut) operates its own streams, targeting specific groups such as:
-
Skilled workers
-
Semi-skilled workers
-
Businesspeople
-
International graduates
Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs): Spreading Immigration Benefits Across Canada
Launched in 1998, PNPs aim to distribute immigration benefits more evenly across Canada, beyond the traditional hubs of Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia. Since their inception, the Prairie (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba) and Atlantic (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador) provinces have seen increased immigrant attraction, largely due to the PNP. There are various streams through which one can apply.
PNP Streams:
- Express Entry-Aligned (‘Enhanced’) Streams: These streams are linked with the federal Express Entry system. A provincial nomination under an enhanced stream grants an additional 600 CRS points, virtually ensuring an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence through Express Entry, with processing times typically around six months.
- Base Streams: Applicants apply directly to a PNP stream. Upon receiving a provincial nomination, they then apply to the federal government for permanent residence processing.
Each province and territory in Canada has its own set of Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) streams. These streams are designed to meet the specific job market needs and economic goals of that region. Different streams target various groups of people, including skilled workers, semi-skilled workers, international graduates, and entrepreneurs. Some provinces prioritize people in jobs that are currently in high demand, while others focus on individuals who already have a job offer or work experience in certain industries within that province. The requirements to be eligible, the steps to apply, and how the province decides who gets nominated are different for each province and each stream. Need help choosing the right PNP stream? Which provinces in Canada offer Provincial Nomination Programs?
Across Canada, many provinces and territories run their own Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs). These programs give local governments the authority to select immigrants who align with their workforce requirements and economic development goals. Depending on the region, there are streams aimed at skilled professionals, recent graduates from Canadian institutions, entrepreneurs, and others with valuable expertise.
