Overview

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is an online system used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to manage applications for permanent residency under three programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

Applicants are ranked based on a points-based system called the CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System). The highest-ranked applicants receive Invitations to Apply (ITAs) through regular and targeted draws.

What are targeted Express Entry draws?

Since 2023, IRCC has introduced category-based draws for candidates with specific skills or backgrounds, such as:

  • Healthcare professionals (nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, etc.)
  • STEM occupations (engineers, data scientists, tech workers)
  • French-speaking candidates
  • Tradespeople (plumbers, electricians, construction workers)
  • Transport and agriculture occupations

What is the difference between general and category-based draws?

  • General Draws: Open to all Express Entry-eligible candidates.
  • Program-Specific Draws: Limited to candidates under a specific program such as PNP or CEC.
  • Category-Based Draws: Limited to candidates in specific sectors—such as healthcare, French proficiency, trades, education—with sometimes lower CRS thresholds

How is the CRS score calculated?

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) assigns points based on:

  • Age (Maximum: 110)
  • Education (Maximum: 150)
  • Language Proficiency (Maximum: 160)
  • Work Experience
  • Spouse’s Profile (if applicable)
  • Canadian Job Offer or Nomination (Up to 600 bonus points)
  • French Language Bonus (Up to 50 points extra)

Recent targeted draw cutoffs:

  • Healthcare professionals: 431–460
  • French-speaking candidates: 375–435
  • STEM occupations: 486–491
  • General draws: 525+

How can I improve my chances of getting an ITA?

You can significantly improve your chances by:

  • Retaking IELTS/CELPIP to get higher language scores
  • Adding a French language test to qualify for Francophone draws
  • Gaining more work experience before applying
  • Completing another credential or diploma
  • Including your spouse’s qualifications in the profile
  • Applying for PNP nomination (worth 600 points)
  • Securing a valid job offer supported by an LMIA

What is the CRS cutoff for recent general draws?

Recent general draws have CRS cutoffs above 520, which means only candidates with high scores are getting invitations in general rounds. However, category-based draws for healthcare, trades, STEM, and French-speaking candidates often have lower thresholds, giving more applicants a chance.

What are targeted Express Entry draws?

Targeted draws, also known as category-based draws, invite candidates with specific skills such as healthcare experience, STEM occupations, trade skills, or French language proficiency. These draws allow Canada to fill critical labor shortages and often have lower CRS cutoffs than general draws.

How often do Express Entry draws happen?

Express Entry draws typically occur every two weeks, but the schedule is not fixed. The government may hold additional category-based draws in between, depending on labor needs. It is important to keep your profile updated so you are ready when a draw happens.

How many CRS points does a provincial nomination add?

A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points to your profile, virtually guaranteeing an Invitation to Apply in the next Express Entry draw. This is one of the most effective ways to increase your chances if your CRS is low.

How can I increase my CRS score?

There are several ways to improve your CRS score: retake your language test for higher scores, add French language proficiency, gain more work experience, complete a higher level of education, include your spouse’s credentials, or apply for a provincial nomination for an additional 600 points.

What documents are required for Express Entry?

You will need:

  • Passport
  • IELTS/CELPIP or TEF scorecard
  • ECA report from WES/ICAS/IQAS/etc.
  • Work experience proof (letters, salary slips, job duties)
  • Proof of funds (bank letters, account statements)
  • Police clearance from all relevant countries
  • Medical exam from IRCC-approved panel physicians
  • Digital photograph and family documents (if applicable)

How does the Express Entry system work?

  1. Language Test
Take IELTS, CELPIP, or TEF. Higher language scores mean more CRS points.
  2. Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)
Get your foreign qualifications assessed by WES, ICAS, or another approved body.
  3. Create Express Entry Profile
Submit your work experience, education, language test results, and more.
  4. Enter the Express Entry Pool
You will receive a CRS score and wait for an Invitation to Apply.
  5. Receive an ITA
If you meet the cutoff in a draw, you will have 60 days to submit your PR application.
  6. Submit Documents and Pay Fees
Upload proof of your qualifications, experience, police checks, and medicals.
  7. Receive Your PR Visa
Once approved, you will receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and PR visa.

What is the processing time for Express Entry?

The average processing time is 6 to 8 months after you submit your PR application.
Note: Time to get an ITA depends on your CRS score and eligibility for targeted draws.

Who can apply through Express Entry?

  • You may be eligible if you:
    • Are aged 18 to 45
    • Have at least one year of full-time skilled work experience (in NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3)
    • Have completed a recognized diploma or degree
    • Can speak English and/or French (minimum CLB 7 in most cases)
    • Have sufficient settlement funds (unless exempt)
    • Are healthy and have a clean police record
