Overview
What Is Caregiver Immigration?
Caregiver immigration programs are designed to bring qualified caregivers to Canada to address the demand for child care and home support services. These programs offer a direct route to permanent residency after gaining required work experience. Unlike older caregiver programs, these pilots are more flexible and family-friendly, allowing your spouse and children to accompany you.
What Are the Types of Caregiver Programs?
Canada currently offers two main caregiver pathways:
- Home Child Care Provider Pilot (HCCP): For individuals who provide care for children in private homes.
- Home Support Worker Pilot (HSWP): For those who offer support to elderly individuals or people with disabilities.
Both pilots allow caregivers to apply for an occupation-specific open work permit and obtain PR after completing 24 months of Canadian work experience.
Home Child Care Provider Pilot (HCCP)
The HCCP is for individuals who:
- Provide child care in private homes (NOC 44100).
- Have at least 1 year of relevant experience.
- Meet language (CLB 5) and education (post-secondary diploma or equivalent) requirements.
Examples of roles include babysitters, nannies, and child care providers.
Home Support Worker Pilot (HSWP)
The HSWP is for caregivers who:
- Provide support for seniors, individuals with disabilities, or people recovering from illness (NOC 44101).
- Perform duties like bathing, feeding, administering medication, and companionship.
- Meet the same CLB 5 and education requirements as HCCP.
Benefits of the Caregiver Immigration Pathway
- Direct Path to PR: You can become a permanent resident after 2 years of work experience.
- Family Inclusion: Spouses are eligible for open work permits, and children can receive study permits.
- Occupation-Specific Work Permits: You can work for any employer in your occupation, not tied to one employer.
- Simplified Processing: Up to 5,500 applications are accepted annually, with priority processing for eligible candidates.
HCCP is an immigration program for caregivers who provide child care in private homes. It allows applicants to work in Canada on an occupation-specific permit and apply for PR after 24 months of work experience. The program accepts 2,750 applicants annually.
HSWP is designed for caregivers who provide support to seniors or individuals with disabilities. Applicants work in private homes under NOC 44101 and can transition to permanent residency after gaining 2 years of experience.
Yes, a valid job offer from a Canadian employer is mandatory for both HCCP and HSWP. The offer must be for full-time, non-seasonal work and include all standard employment details.
Applicants must achieve CLB 5 in English or French. Accepted tests include IELTS (General) with scores of 5 in all bands or CELPIP (General).
No, LMIA is not required under these pilots. This makes the process easier compared to other work permits that depend on LMIA approval.
